Harina Artisan Bakery Cafe (26)

Formerly know as Monsees Café, Harina Artisan Bakery Café officially re-opened its doors to the public this November. From a smaller neighborhood bakery, Harina is now ready to accept a bigger audience and offer a more extensive line-up of dine-in and take-out breads and meals.

ar·ti·san  [ahr-tuh-zuhn]: a person or company that makes a high-quality or distinctive product in small quantities, usually byhand or using traditional methods.

Upon arrival at Harina Café, you will be greeted by a couple of beautiful red doors which will lead in to a very homey and cozy dining area. A bunch friendly staff will assist you inside the cafe. The café is divided into 2 parts, there’s the dining area and the take out area where you can choose and buy their Artisan Baked Goods.

What makes Harina Artisan Bakery Cafe special?
”Everything is a labor of love. The baking is done the traditional way, without shortcuts and chemical additives. Since chemical additives are not used, the flavors of each ingredient are fully developed. It wasn't necessary to add chemicals to bread for centuries and Harina believes that it still isn't. Nothing less than premium ingredients are used. The breads are hand rolled. They do not mass-produce their breads, they are baked in small batches rather than on a vast assembly line. An interesting corner is their open baking area which allows customers to see how some of their products are made.”

Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort (62)

It was a dream come true. I have been to a lot of different beaches here in the Philippines but enjoying the sun, food, and the sand in your very own private island resort was a surreal experience. Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort is located 3-4 hours drive south of Cebu Island, it is just a couple of towns away from the southern most tip of Cebu – your jump off point to Dumaguete and Siquijor. Upon arrival on their Mainland Port/Reception area, we were greeted by their super friendly staff. From there going forward, we were officially on vacation. No need to lift a finger on carrying our luggage and stuff.

ISSAAS: Linking Agriculture with Tourism

I recently attended the press release session of ISSAAS (International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences) during the start of their 2013 Congress here in Manila. I am a big fan of Agri-Tourism so I thought I’d listen in and get their thoughts on some burning issues related to Agriculture and Tourism as well.

ISSAAS 2013 Congress

Global Warming

One of the main issues of the Agriculture Industry is Global Warming so to mitigate this, they are trying harder to keep up with the changes in the environment. They use more water for irrigation and on the other side, they use more storm resilient crops to survive sudden storms and typhoons. Agriculture was not as it used to be but we must keep up and stay resilient to keep the food basket full.

Attracting Young Minds

The new generation of adults are leaving the farm and very few are taking Agricultural related courses in place of more popular and in-demand city courses. This problem is the same across all countries. Young people are moving out of their Family Farms to move to the city, leaving the farm to be ran by their old folks with no clear future on succession. To mitigate this, countries are offering free Agricultural Courses to individuals who want to pursue a career in Agriculture. Even in the Philippines, UPLB offers subsidies to some agriculture related courses. In Japan, they included “Farm Visits” to the Educational Field Trip Itinerary to familiarize the students about the farm activities – in the hopes that they will like it and get a career in Agriculture.

GMO: Genetically Modified Organisms

A surprisingly sensitive topic between the members of ISSAAS. Some are ok with it some were not so much. But among all the answers given, what struck me was – it really exists. GMO is being used for the food security of the world BUT unfortunately, there are no extensive research or studies on the long term effects of these GMO Products on humans and the environment. Everything is still in the Gray Area.

Plantation Based Farming

Plantation based farming is basically utilizing a huge amount of land dedicated in the production of a certain produce. For example: Banana Plantations, Coconut Plantations and now the ever Growing Palm Plantation for the production of Palm Oil. The challenge here is, huge amounts of lands are being used as plantation lands since it is easier to maintain focus on a certain product than to allow other produce to be planted and harvested. More and more chunks of land are being converted into Palm Plantation and less and less lands are being used for other crops.

Organic Products

Organic Stuff are becoming more and more popular nowadays and people are paying the premium. The problem is, particularly here in the Philippines, there are only few private organization which offers organic certifications and no government official seal on organic products. That is why even though products are marketed as organic, the public is not really assured of the authenticity of the seal and at the same time, the public is not even aware that there should be a seal of authenticity. Currently, the organic farming relies on trust.

Agri-Tourism

Agri-Tourism is becoming bigger and bigger nowadays. In Japan, they have farm tours where you can actually take part of the actual farming process – Hands On! In the Philippines, there are bee farm plantations, strawberry picking in Baguio and other family or privately owned farm restaurants and resorts which cater to tourists. The challenge for the organization is to raise awareness about Agri-Tourism, make it more mainstream and to get more support from the government.

Member Countries of the ISSAAS meet every year to present new technologies and to impart the best practices in the Agricultural Industry. Last 2012 and this year 2013, ISSAAS Congress were held here in the Philippines. The 2014 ISSAAS Congress will be held in Japan. To know more about ISSAAS, visit their website at ISSAAS.ORG.

Manila Taxi Fare Guide Table (By Distance and Time)

Manila Taxi Fare

Most locals who ride the Taxi regularly within Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao are familiar with the standard Philippine Taxi rates. Most passengers like me even have historical records on how much my meter will cost to get me from one point to another since we often go on certain places on a regular basis. But if your still have doubts about your taxi’s meter reading, here’s a quick table guide on how to compute your taxi fare within the Philippines. I saw these when I was riding a MGE taxi a few weeks back when I was heading home.

The Philippine Standard Taxi Rate or Computation is as follows:

Flag Down Rate: P40.00
+
Distance Rate (every 300 meters) P3.50
+
Wait Time during stops and traffic jams (every 2 minutes) P3.50
=
Total Fare

I know its hard to compute the estimated fare because of the combination of time and distance charging and not to mention, the horrible traffic situation in Manila so let these table guide your trip cost estimation:

Here’s the Philippine Taxi Fare Guide by Distance (Manila, Cebu, Davao)

Philippine Taxi Fare Guide By Distance

Here’s the Philippine Taxi Fare Guide by Wait Time (Manila, Cebu, Davao)

Philippine Taxi Fare Guide By Wait Time

It is not a perfect system, the final meter reading still rules but at least if you are planning on taking a cab in Manila often, it pays to be informed and like I said, store some historical data on how much does it really costs (at least on average) to get around Metro Manila via the Cab.

To get the actual distance between your destinations, you may always consult Google Maps! :)

Having Megamall as the first H&M Philippines location, my bet is the SM Group is behind this deal.

Cebu Yellow Submarine: My First Ever Submarine Ride!

Cebu Yellow Submarine 03

It is real! And yes, it is called the Yellow Submarine! You can ride an actual submarine here in the Philippines and it is in Cebu! Here’s a quick back story… I was vacationing at Bluewater Maribago Resort last July and while we were walking on the beach we were told by some guys from the resort pointing at a distant resort “kita mo yun? Submarine yun!”  And something inside me sparked! I need to ride that submarine!! But unfortunately, we were pressed for time that vacation so I was not able to do it. But I was really really excited! Do you know anyone who have ridden a submarine? A real Submarine?! I know right! Super exciting!!

Luckily I have another Cebu Trip to Attend a Birthday Party in a few weeks so I made sure I include the submarine ride in my itinerary. The ride is very very in demand since there are only several trips per day and the submarine can only accommodate a maximum of 48 people at a time so you better call to reserve and don’t ever come in late… you should be at the Yellow Submarine Reception area at the Imperial Palace Lobby at least 15-30 minutes before your dive.

Tap Tap and Away with Citibank Visa with payWave!

Citibank Visa PayWave Philippines 01

I just love cashless and electronic payments, it is so safe, convenient and cool. I have been experiencing this tap and pay technology for a while now particularly in the developed countries and I must say, it was love at first tap. I can still remember the first time I experienced this tap and pay technology, I was in Singapore using their EZ-Link Card. It was super convenient since your can use it practically everywhere. From then on, I was hoping and wishing that someday we get to experience the same technology and convenience in our country. And now, the time has come! It is finally happening in the Philippines - although still not widely available - but I really do think we are off to a promising start.

Citibank Philippines now offers the Visa payWave to its cardholders! A first in the Philippines!

Situated in the famous Mactan Island Cebu, Maribago Bluewater is one of the pioneer luxury resort in the area - A classic I must say. Don’t get me wrong, when I say Classic I mean it in a good way. Yes, Maribago Bluewater is a pioneer but they managed to keep up with the time and the competition. For the young once, they would expect some old-fashioned Cebu resort but in reality Maribago is one very elegant and sophisticated resort which truly highlights the traditional Filipino Hospitality with a few modern twists.

Bite into the Biggest Burger in Manila!

Holiday Inn Manila Big Buns Burger 1

Well, I am not sure if there is an actual and official record but by far, this is the biggest burger that I have ever seen and tried in Manila the Philippines – Holiday Inn Manila Galleria’s Big Buns Burger!

  • 12 inches in diameter (its like a regular pizza)
  • 4 inches thick
  • 8 slices
  • Filled with Cheese, Bacon, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Pickles, and Scrambles Egg!

Sink your teeth on this baby!

Holiday Inn Manila Big Buns Burger 2

Holiday Inn Manila Big Buns Burger 3

Holiday Inn Manila Big Buns Burger 4

Holiday Inn Manila Big Buns Burger 5

Priced at P800++ the Big Buns Burger is an Amazing Novelty Item from Holiday Inn Galleria and Crowne Plaza Hotel. Everything is made from the ground up, in house! Honestly, when food gets bigger the flavor and the taste dwindles but that is not the case for the Big Buns Burger! It was still really good!

The patty was not that Juicy as compared with the smaller patties but it still packs some really good flavor. The bun was not dry at all it was perfect! And you really get to taste all the fillings/toppings on every bite (if you can)! Condiments are served on the side but based from experience I don’t need much of it. You will feel full just by looking at it.

The burger is good for 6-8 people but I’m sure there will always be some left-over. Don’t worry, this burger re-heats in the microwave perfectly! 3 days after ordering… take it out from fridge, pop it in the microwave for a minute or two and it will be 80% as good as the fresh one! Just don’t forget to remove the tomatoes before refrigerating.

According to the Hotel, this Burger is usually ordered in place of a birthday cake. You may request for a candle. :) So Go on! Drop by Holiday Inn Galleria or Crowne Plaza and order one now! Don’t forget to pose with the burger for Social Sharing! :)

75th Oktoberfest Celebration at Sofitel Manila

Sofitel Manila 75th Oktoberfest 201317

Similar with the German Club of Manila and Sofitel Manila, the annual Oktoberfest celebration has also, sort of, became a tradition in dencio.com. I have been blogging about the event for several years now and what I can say is, the tradition stays true to the original Oktoberfest but the celebration gets bigger and better every year.

Sofitel Manila 75th Oktoberfest 201316

This year, the 75th Oktoberfest will be celebrated here in the Philippines. That means, Barrels and Barrels of Beers and Pounds and Pounds of Bavarian food will be served again at Sofitel Manila’s newly renovated Harbor Garden Tent on October 18 and 19. A close to home party for our German Friends and a Truly Magnificent Cultural Experience for Filipinos.

Of course the stars of the Show are the Beers and the Food! The beer will be provided by our very own San Miguel Brewery but the food, an all-imported array of traditional and authentic Bavarian goodness!

Quest Hotel Cebu 55

I had a chance to be a sort of “Business Traveller” during my recent Trip to Cebu. Why? because I was working during the day and touring the city after office hours. I stayed at Quest Hotel for 3 days during my trip and it was fantastic. Quest Hotel is mostly marketed as a business hotel but they are also gaining popularity among non-business travellers.

During my stay, I realized why Quest Hotel Cebu is the perfect choice for the business travellers.

  1. Amazingly Competitive Corporate Rates
  2. 3-Star Hotel with a 5-Star Service
  3. Complete Facilities and Amenities for Business Travellers
  4. Plenty of Function Rooms and Meeting Rooms for Private Meetings
  5. Centrally Located at the Heart of Cebu City – Right Beside Ayala Center

So let start my Business Staycation Experience at Quest Hotel Cebu.
