Drive for Blue Skies: Be a Committed Eco-Driver!

Honda 1M Blue Campaign

Go Green! It is probably one of the most used phrases nowadays, It’s everywhere. Plastic ban, recycling, zero-waste and a lot more programs are being implemented just to minimize our carbon footprint, reduce pollution and help the earth recover. There are lots of huge projects being pushed out there to help the environment like reforestation, renewable energy, solar power, etc. but for most of us the most sustainable are the practical and easy to comply with initiatives which we can do on a daily basis. If you give people an avenue to help the environment, they will do it. For example, if you provide a waste segregation facility in your office or in public places, people tend to comply, why? Because it is easier for them. We don’t focus on the size of the program but the impact, discipline and awareness that it provides. Yes, it may not have a huge impact per person but collectively, it will definitely make a huge impact in the environment. Same goes with driving. We all know that burning fuel really takes a toll in our atmosphere, even the most advanced vehicles out there still emits some Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the air what more for your old car?

In the Philippines, 70% of the fuel burned are in the roads. That comes from the 6 million registered motor vehicles in the country which gives out millions of tons of CO2 in the atmosphere every year. And every year, hundreds of thousands of cars are being introduced on our streets. Not only does this cause traffic (another issue)  but it produces additional deadly CO2 that we share with our friends, family and kids. Here’s a quick info-graphic video about climate change and air pollution in the Philippines.

1M Blue Campaign

Bothering isn't it? Now, you may ask, what can I do to help? I know you are willing but in reality lingering at the back of you mind, you were wishing it to be as simple as possible for easy compliance. Well, you can help in your own little way. Read on…

Cafe Eight Southeast Asian Buffet Crimson Hotel 40

There’s something new in Crimson Hotel Alabang, an authentic Southeast Asian Buffet personally prepared by their Guest Malaysian Chef Alex Chong. Personally, Southeast Asian Cuisine can be either a hit or a miss here in Manila. Some offer really good Southeast Asian Dishes some don’t. So I was really delighted when I tried this themed buffet at Crimson Manila, and it turned out amazing!

A Malaysian Chef + Authentic Imported Ingredients and you get an awesome buffet with close-to-home Southeast Asian flavors. The food really tastes how they should and the flavors were spot on.

Are You Stealing From Your Hotel Room?

Hotel Toiletries

I was watching my favorite show – Friends – for the nth time and I stumbled upon this episode where Chandler and Ross checked-in on a hotel. I found it so funny and relevant that I decided to write a post about it. The back story was they went out of town to stay in a hotel room that was originally meant for Chandler and Monica (Monica was busy so Ross took her place). However, their original reservation got cancelled for some reason so they were forced to book the only available room that day – a $600 suite. They felt that they were ripped off because of the steep price so they decided to take everything that they can or ask from the hotel to get their money back. They took literally EVERYTHING, from the complimentary fruits at the lobby, to several pieces of “Complimentary” Toiletries the hotel has to offer.

Watch the hilarious clip below to see what happened.

(Copyrights to the Owner. Due to some sharing limitations of this video, it can only be seen via a computer, audio only for mobile.)

Like me, I’m pretty sure that some of you felt a little bit guilty about this. I am not sure why, but I love taking home those little bottles of shampoos and soaps from my room. In fact, I already have a bunch of them here at home. That is OK! Now, what is the line between stealing and getting what the hotel owes you?

“Hairdryers? No No No! But the Shampoos and Conditioners? Yes Yes Yes!”

I have had my fair share of travel and hotel room experience and I am proud to say that I have not went that far when it comes to taking stuff inside my hotel room. Usually, here are the items that I take home with me upon check-out.

  • Soap
  • Shampoo (Especially the branded ones)
  • Bath gel
  • Dental Kit
  • Shower Cap
  • Complimentary Bottled Water (If still available)
  • Newspaper of the day
  • Twining's Tea Bags
  • Re-usable laundry bags
  • Hotel Slippers
  • Hotel Pen and Notepads (I love hotel pens)

Chopard Toiletries

Key Card

I must admit, sometimes I accidentally get to take home the key card as a souvenir since on some hotels, upon entry to your hotel room, there is already one key card inserted inside the power switch so I ended up having 3 and I only have to surrender 2. I have talked to some of my Hotelier friends about this and all of them said that this should not be the case especially for the RF and Magnetic key card since they are a bit expensive. If I am not mistaken, a card costs around P300 each. Some hotels allow this and they even encourage you to take it home as a souvenir but for most, this is not the case. Perhaps you can ask?

The salt shaker is off limits, but the salt…?

I know that the video above is a bit exaggerated but they nailed the point. I believe that if you start taking home light bulbs, LAN Cables, Remote Controls (Yes, even the battery), Pillows, Towels, Hangers, Hair Dryers, Holy Bibles and Extension Phones from your room then you may be have some real problem. These actions draws the not-so-fine line between stealing and getting what is yours inside the hotel.

My tip is, if you find something inside your hotel room that you really, really like or really want, you can just ask the hotel if they are selling them. Some hotels sells their pillows, towels, comforters and sheets. If they are not selling the item, I’m sure someone from the hotel knows where they got it. Aren't you afraid on getting caught during check-out? That would be so embarrassing. They check the room you know! :p And for the sake of argument, if you managed to take them home without being caught, you will eventually realize that what you did was wrong. That’s so uncool!

Ouch right? So how about you? What stuff do you usually take home from your hotel room?

Hanggang sa muli, Paalam!

[UPDATE]

Here’s the complete video (longer version) of Ross and Chandler’s Vermont Hotel Adventure. This video also includes the clip shown above. Unfortunately, the clip is also only playable on the PC. Audio only for mobile devices (Phones, Tablets).

Puso Bistro and Bar is the flagship restaurant of Quest Hotel Cebu. Puso serves breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets everyday. And would you believe, for only P499 (promo price) you get to enjoy a wide array of hotel quality dishes like Tempura, Roast Beef, Ribs and Sushi! Like most hotel buffets Puso also rotates their dishes and offer a sort of themed buffet spread every night to keep the buffet more interesting and offer variety especially to their long staying guests.

During my recent stay at Quest Hotel Cebu I was able to try their Dinner buffet. Puso offers a mid-sized buffet. It has a Japanese Station, Pasta Bar, Carving Station, Salad, Noodles, Soup, Appetizers, Bread and of course Main Course and Dessert. Most of the items/dishes in the buffet are rotated except for the mainstays like the salads, sushi and tempura.

Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria 39

When you hear about Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, you immediately think of it as a business hotel – yes that is true – but did you know that Crowne Plaza also makes a good hotel for city staycationers? Here it goes, when I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria recently, my room category was under their Club Lounge category so I checked-in at the 19th floor of the hotel instead of the usual check in counter at the ground floor lobby. The check-in was super smooth and the staff on the lounge was super friendly (I would assume that they assign their best staff at the lounge) and while she was preparing my room key and check-in documents, the Club Lounge offers coffee, light snacks and refreshments. I guess my staycation already started upon check-in.

As soon as we are done with our snacks, I was given the keycard to my room. They offered help to carry my backpack but I told the staff that I can manage. So I went down to the 11th floor where my room was located. Upon entering my room, I was really amazed how good and big it was. Crowne Plaza Manila is a sister company of Holiday Inn Manila Galleria but they have way better rooms. Everything is modern, functional and sophisticated.

Rica's Restaurant Henry Hotel 03

After a wonderful night inside my large room at the Henry Hotel, it is time for my breakfast treat! Breakfast at the Henry Hotel is served at Rica’s Restaurant located at the lobby level. Since the hotel only has 38 rooms, the breakfast is plated. Keeping up with the vibe of the hotel, Rica’s also has this unique-artsy feel to it.

The tables and chairs have different designs, color, height and pattern. They have small booths for a cozier dining experience at the same time, long tables for large groups. The chandeliers were covered in printed fabrics and the floor and ceiling was kept bare to highlight the other designs in the room. Rica’s also has a door going to the pool, they even have a few table for al-fresco dining.

Like I said the breakfast was plated and is complimentary to all (registered) Hotel Guest. You have 4 hearty breakfast options at Rica’s:

  • American Breakfast
  • European Breakfast
  • Filipino Breakfast
  • Fitness Breakfast

Of course I went for the one with Rice!

The Tapsilog was good except that the serving was not enough for me… but it was a good start that morning. At least, I still have space for all the food that I will eat during my city tour of Cebu. If there’s one thing missing, they forgot to serve the fruit, but It was partly my fault since It also slipped my mind. If I could give a suggestion, they should have a danggit option for breakfast. :)

Breakfast at Rica’s is served from 6:00 AM – 10:30 AM Daily.

Well, there your go! The perfect way to start your day at The Henry Hotel Cebu.

Hanggang sa muli, Paalam!

Don’t Just Run… Run for a Cause!

People run for several reasons, some run to be physically fit, to train for a marathon, some run to stalk their crush, some due to peer pressure, the others because running is “in” and for some, photo-ops and freebies. But whatever your reason and motivation for running are, the bottomline, you love running and everything else that you get from it is just a bonus.

Battle of the Sexes Run 2

So how about this, you get to run, help a foundation raise funds, compete with the opposite gender and once and for all settle who is faster and get a chance to win awesome prizes after the race – overnight stays at Sofitel Luxury Hotel and Spiral Buffet Gift Vouchers – just to name a few. It’s the perfect combination right?

“Sofitel Philippine Plaza announces the launch of the Sofitel-Run Rio Battle of the Sexes Leg 2, a 5 k and 10k Fun Run to be held on the 1st of September 2013 at the SM MOA Grounds, SM Mall of Asia. Luxury prizes from Sofitel is at stake during the fun run including a three night stay at the Sofitel suite, access to Club Millésime, the hotel’s exclusive Club lounge, dining at Spiral, beauty treatments from Le Spa and Vietura, the new Aesthetic Lifestyle Institute. The second run follows the success of its first leg which attracted more than 3,000 runners last March 2013.

RunRio is a series of 10k and 5 K fun runs organized by the Sofitel Philippine Plaza together with RunRio Inc. and headed by the foremost running coach in the country, Coach Rio de la Cruz. The Battle of the Sexes Fun Run’s unique concept of male vs. female is a first in the country with both 10 k and 5k race. Male and female participants will compete with each other in one finish line, one venue, and one distance. Female runners will start the race then the male runners will follow after 3 minutes (5k) and 7 minutes (10k run).

Sofitel Philippine Plaza general manager, Adam Laker says, “We were delighted with the success of our first ever run in collaboration with Coach Rio dela Cruz which attracted more than 3,000 runners. Over PHP 755,000 have been raised and has been used to purchase a van that was recently handed over to the Virlanie Foundation for their activities for the street children of Manila. It is Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s advocacy to create a brighter future for the less privileged children of Manila. Since 2007, the hotel has launched several projects to help raise funds to support the foundation’s benevolent activities in order to reach out to the children and families living in the poorest areas of Metro Manila.

The run officially starts at 5am at the Mall of Asia grounds. Gun starts at 05:30am for 10k and 5:45am for 5k.

Tickets are on sale at Php 500 for the 5K and Php 800 for the 10K, inclusive of the run registration and running kit. Registration sites are at Riovanna BGC and Katipunan and Toby’s Mall of Asia and SM the Block.

For more information on the Run Rio Fun Run, visit www.runrio.com or contact and email 0929 7178164 and runrio.racereg@gmail.com.”

RunRio 2013

Its time to give back once again, let us help top the previous record of P755,000 donation to Virlanie foundation… and Gentlemen, we are the reigning champion (even though the ladies get a 3 minute lead time from the gun) let us keep it that way! :)

Registration Period is July 16 to August 25 Only… reserve your race kits now! :)

Hanggang sa muli, Paalam!
