Where? Need a suggestion? Well, if you are in the Quezon Avenue Area or Merville in Paranaque, you may want to try Kitchen Hobbies Cooking Center.

About the School:

Kitchen Hobbies is a culinary school for beginners who want to learn how to cook, for food lovers who want to learn new recipes, and for certified foodies who want to explore new tastes. We offer a variety of classes in Chinese, Asian, Japanese, and Filipino cuisines. Other modules are the Basic and Advance Cooking Workshops where students try their best in these fun-filled and gastronomically satisfying hands-on classes.

All recipes are kitchen tested and are guaranteed to be do-able and consistently delicious every time. We aim to do home-style recipes that are to be enjoyed by the whole family, never lacking in taste and surely to impress relatives and friends.

The cooking center is an extension of the Ty’s home kitchen thus it houses the regular items and equipment that you may find in an ordinary household. None of the fancy stuff and gadgets here, thus giving it a homey feel once you enter the premises. But do not let the simplicity mislead you. Kitchen Hobbies consistently produce students who can cook and cook well.

The Couple Behind Kitchen Hobbies Cooking School:

Kitchen Hobbies is operated by the husband and wife team of Jerry and Eleanor Ty–a team-up that grew from their love of food, dining, and entertaining.

Jerry is a graduate of Medical Technology from Far Eastern University. During his childhood, the sight and smell of his paternal grandma’s cooking impressed in him an indelible love for fine food. He fondly remembers how his A-mah would cook comfort foods that make him want to come home immediately after school. A true food enthusiast, he dreamt of having a food-related job or business of his own.

Eleanor is a Hotel & Restaurant Management, Magna cum Laude graduate of Trinity College of Quezon City (now Trinity University of Asia). She taught in her alma mater teaching major subjects and conducting laboratory/cooking classes. She joined Holiday Inn Manila in 1996 and held a position of an account manager-Corporate Room Sales Division in Holiday Inn Manila. Eleanor’s love for cooking began at an early age of 11 when cooking meals for the family was delegated to her. Reading cookbooks, watching cooking shows, clipping recipes, and attending classes became her pastimes. Going to the marketplace was a weekly chore and there she would fondly observe the fish, chicken or meat vendors do their stuff. She would be satiated watching how fresh lumpia wrappers were made and being able to smell the wonderful aroma it produced. Her mother would buy baking pans and ingredients for her and she would patiently experiment on recipes (be it a hit or flop) and have her siblings try them out. From her adventures and misadventures in the kitchen sprouted her love for the craft.

In 2004, Jerry and Eleanor joined the 2nd Century Culinary Meet and bagged the grand prize for the Amateur Division. This became the turning point when they decided to open a cooking class in his parents’ old place in Binondo. Kitchen Hobbies opened its doors in Binondo in November 2004. The humble beginnings of holding a class with just one student and eventually seeing regular attendees grew in number is a blessing. Loyal students followed them when they transferred to their new home in Quezon City last May 2006.

The classes are held on a classroom type set-up. The ambiance is very informal and candid. The recipes/modules will be provided as well as the ingredients. You’ll surely have fun interacting with the “chefs” and your classmates.

Here are some of the dishes that they prepared for us.

Pineapple Fried Rice: One of the best I have tried so far. I learned that doing this at your own house is way, way cheaper (and better) than buying one from a restaurant.

Lion’s Head with Brown Sauce: This is a good alternative to the usual sweet and sour meatball dish. This Meatball dish got its name because of the way it was served way back. This is usually served on top of cabbage leaves thus making the big meatballs look like a lions head. This dish is traditionally served in 4’s or 8’s for good luck during the Chinese New Year celebration. This is a good way to make your kids eat veggies. Tucked Inside the meatballs are shredded carrots and cabbage. 🙂

Chinese Steamed Egg: This is something new to me. A pleasant surprise. It was really good. Very Light and delicate yet very flavorful. This is made from eggs steamed and topped with stir-fried ground pork, shrimps, and mushrooms.

Kitchen Hobbies Cooking Center13

Almond Tofu: Basically this is Almond Flavored Jelly (which looks like tofu) served with almond flavored syrup and your favorite fruit. On this case, pears 🙂 Topped with photogenic cherry of course. This light and not too sweet dessert is the perfect way to end a great meal!
