15 Reasons why I Love Seoul

I have been to Seoul South Korea twice already and I still want to go back… Thinking of reasons why, I listed down 15 reasons why me and other people love going to Seoul, South Korea.

1. Amazing Coffee Everywhere!

Caffe Bene

(Caffe Bene Coffee + Honey Bread with Cheese and Garlic)

If you are a coffee lover like me then you’ll love Seoul. Just like their cosmetic stores, coffee shops are everywhere. I mean everywhere! There is one every 10 meters or so! And the best part is, most if not all of them serve amazing coffee. The downside, they only have 2 sizes (Small and Large). Forget Starbucks! Caffé Bene and Angel-In-Us Coffee Serve Amazing Brews 24/7! If you see people in Seoul with stirrers locked in their lips, don’t be bothered, it is not oral fixation. They are actually Stirrer-Straws. Which in my opinion, makes you enjoy the flavor of the coffee. There are also specialty coffee shops like Hello Kitty Café and CNN Café.

Hello Kitty Cafe Seoul (Hongik University)

2. Gotta' Love the Public Transportation System (Subway, Bus, Taxi)

Seoul has one of the most extensive and efficient subway and bus system in the world. Close to 600 Stations and Interchanges running along ~1,000 Km of tracks which in my opinion is a very enjoyable experience (Prepare to walk). Each station has multiple exits, make sure that you get out on the right one because it will be a hassle if you find yourself on the far side of your destination. Fares start at around 1,000 won per ride.

Seoul Subway Gate

The most convenient way to get around and pay for the Train, Bus, and Taxi is by using the T-Money Card. You just have to Buy one, reload, and then you can tap and go inside the train stations, bus, taxis, and convenience stores.

Can’t read Korean? No Problem! Train and Bus stations have English translations. But the taxi is a totally different story, even if you ride the black (deluxe) cabs which supposed to come with an English speaking driver, English directions can still be a challenge. Taxi Flag down Rates in Seoul is 2,400 Korean won (+100 won every few meters) and 4,500 for the Deluxe Taxi. T-Cards, Cash, and Credit Cards are accepted in the cabs.

3. Blazing Internet Speeds

Seoul Internet Speed

A 20mbps connection is a regular thing. Based from my experience, this is the slowest that it can get. I was able to download a 25GB file in under an hour! Free Wi-Fi is a bit hard to come by though. Most Koreans are in a data plan which allows them to surf using their smart phones via LTE or Wi-Fi Connections so they don’t really need free Wi-Fi connections from coffee shops and restaurants. They are connected 24/7 even 5 basements underground. There is Wi-Fi inside the Trains.

4. Terrific Phone Service

Did I just Mention LTE? Yes, they are one of those few countries where your non-3G phone will not work. Their minimum signal and phone reception is set to 3G so don’t expect those old model phones to work. Signal strength is unparalleled, like I said there is phone signal even if you are 5 basements underground inside a moving train. On the downside, prepaid SIM cards are not readily available.

5. Very Nice People

helpful Seoul Kids

(3 Students trying to help me find a place using their phones)

For a country that is currently in war, it is nice to see that Koreans are still vibrant, generally very cheerful and happy people. They will try to help you as much as they can. If you found yourselves lost in translation, they will be apologetic for not speaking English which I think is unnecessary yet very polite. I am a foreigner, I should be adjusting to them right? I have been to other non-English speaking countries before wherein if you don’t speak their language they will be mad and be rude at you. It is NOT the case in Seoul.

6. Culture, Culture, and More Culture

Seoul Guard Changing Ceremony

Whether old or new, everything is in Seoul. Palaces, Folk Villages, Hanbok Shops, Museums, Artsy Coffee Shops, Traditional Parchments and Paintbrush! They are still incorporated in this ultra-modern metropolis. It is definitely a place where old meets new.

7. Super Near Manila – 3 hour Flight!

Just like Singapore where most Filipinos Go, Seoul, South Korea is just 3.5 Hours away from Manila. Currently, the numbers of flights are picking up so there is no reason for you not to go! :)

Phippine Passport

8. Free Visa

Wait, Visa is Free but it is not a Visa-Free Country like the ASEAN Countries. You can apply for a visa free of charge for visits of less than 59 days. Processing time is between 3-5 working days and once granted, the visa validity is 90 days.

9. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall

Namsan Tower

Get to experience all 4-seasons, hot summer, Icy Winter, Cherry Blossom Spring, and Chilly Autumns. It is truly a nice escape from the usual tropical climate and a perfect reason to wear those winter and fall collections.

10. Great Food!

Whether you like street foods or Fancy Beef BBQ’s Seoul has everything that you want. Not to mention, Authentic Kimchi and Bulgogi.

Korean Food

11. Tons of Activities to do and Places to see! Most of which are connected via the subway.

Theme parks, Markets, Hotels, Observation Decks, Ski Resorts, Picturesque Nature, Beautiful Bridges, Teddy Bear Museums, and even the Border of North Korea! Yes, DMZ!

To PyeongYang

12. Great Night Life especially near the University Areas. Street dancing, endless parties, Karaoke!

Hongik University Area

13. Shopping Galore! From High to Low ends… Everything is at a discount!

MyeongDong Shopping

14. If you love KPOP and KDRAMA then this place is heaven for you! They are everywhere!

Rooftop Prince

Psy Billboard

Big Bang

15. It is almost like Japan but way, way less expensive. Need I say More?!

Korean Won

I have been to Seoul Twice this year. One in Spring and One in Winter. Next year, I will try Autumn. :) And 2018 will be Winter Olympics! :)

16. Seoul is super safe. You can walk around late at night without worrying about your safety. This city is so safe that security guards are obsolete and people use their bags or Mobile Phones to save a table in a restaurant.

17. The Water. Yes, whether purified or bottled, the drinking water in Korea is one of the most refreshing drinking water I ever had. I am not sure why their water is so refreshing. Maybe it is because it came from the spring or the mountain near the city. But you have got to taste the difference!

New York: My Dream Holiday Destination

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!

I have been dreaming of a White Christmas my whole life for quite some time now. This year, it will finally happen! Although not exactly during the actual Christmas Week, but almost there… I will be going to Seoul, South Korea on December 8-14. I don’t know what to expect but I am definitely expecting Snow… if not in Seoul but at least in the Ski Park where we booked a tour! I was there last April for the Cherry Blossoms and it was super fun. I am sure that this Winter Tour is Twice more Fun!

I am so Excited! -6 Degrees, Bring it on! My winter stuff is all set. Tickets are Booked (Korean Air) . Hotel is booked (Fraser Suites). Tours are booked. And our ever changing itinerary is almost done as well. This is it!

I’m definitely sure that I will be having a Blast in Seoul this Holiday season but deep down, my ultimate holiday destination is still the Big Apple - New York! I want to experience the City that Never Sleeps. I want to eat hotdogs along the streets, eat an authentic New York Pizza, walk around time square, visit the central park and meet Ms. Liberty. All these while loosing track of time. I Know! #Cheesy

If my Seoul Trip is expensive, I am super duper sure that my Dream New York Trip will be even more expensive so I am counting on my Mabuhay Miles to bring me there coupled with a cheap Holidays to New York Tour Package or a Discounted Hotel Accommodation.

My target is 2013 and here is the Plan.
  1. I will apply for a US Visa early next year
  2. Continue earning Mabuhay Miles for my Free Airfare. I currently have 30,000 Miles already. Half of the required 60,000 Miles for the MNL-LAX Flight. If 1 mile is P33 so I just need to spend another P990,000 on my Credit Card! #GoodLuck (I Will have to invite more friends to shop using my Credit Card)
  3. Start Looking for a Discounted New York Accommodation
  4. Plan my itinerary
  5. Stick with The Plan
I am looking forward to my first ever White Christmas/Winter Sonata in Seoul this year. But I am also extremely excited on my next project. I know, It is still a long way to go but time flies so fast so it is better to start sooner rather than later right?
How about you? Where is your Dream Holiday Destination?

8 Reasons Why Filipinos Love Buffets

This is an article I submitted on one of our internal global office publication. I thought, I will share it with you guys as well so that you could let me know what you think. Do you agree? Or Not? Or you have other Ideas in mind? :) Well, here it goes!

Manila, Philippines – A place where buffet is a serious business.

Once upon a time in Manila, buffets were expensive and only exclusive to hotels and resorts. Now, times have changed; buffets are cheap; served everywhere and offered from the time you wake up in the morning up to your midnight snack cravings.

Whether you are craving for Japanese, Filipino, Thai, Malay, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Australian, Italian, Continental, Spanish, Mediterranean, South American, French, Mongolian and even Chocolate (Yes, we do have chocolate buffet)! Everything you want is just within a 3-mile radius from each other with prices ranging only from $5 up to $80.

I was in KL few weeks back and my friends there who went to manila few months ago mentioned that Shangri-La’s breakfast buffet was so huge. It is bigger than some Dinner buffets in KL! Well… that is how serious we are when it comes to buffet.

Here are some reasons why I think Filipinos love buffet.

1. Filipinos love heavy Breakfast!

Breakfast is the most important meal after all right? When other nationalities indulge on cereals, eggs and toasts for breakfast, Filipinos eat Rice (Steamed and Fried), Bread, Pancakes, Pasta (Yes, Pasta!), Noodles, Porridge – YUP! That is Carbs on Carbs on Carbs! - Assortment of processed meats like hotdog, sausages, corned beef and luncheon meats, bacon, and ham are also served. Buffet breakfast usually starts at 5:30am up to 10:30am (Lunch Starts at 11:30AM).

2. It is cheaper than eating Gourmet or Fine Dining.

When you dine in a fine dining restaurant, a complete course will cost you around $100-$200 per person and you get limited choices – and if you do not like one particular dish in the set – it will be such a waste of money. But if you go to the fanciest and longest buffet in Asia at Sofitel Manila, Not only that you get to pay a Maximum of $80, the buffet already includes great steaks, assortment of sea creatures, a chocolate room, and a cheese room where you can find all the cheese that you would think of – Again, All of these and more for just $80. That’s cheap considering that you are in a 5-star hotel, you don’t get to sacrifice the food quality, taste, and ambiance. If you are feeling frugal, there is also Vikings Buffet where you pay only $20 and you get to enjoy Steaks, Seafood, Bottomless Sodas, Juices, Beers, and wait for it - Caviar! #Fancy!

3. Choices, Choices, Choices!

Sometimes you crave for something to eat. But sometimes you are not really sure what you want. So buffet is a good place to start. I'm sure there’s something that will tickle your taste buds.

4. Great for entertaining guests.

Being known for our extreme hospitality, Filipinos love to eat with our guests. It is considered the ultimate bonding experience. But sometimes, if you are not that familiar on the food preference of your guest or if you just don’t have the time to take their request one by one, Then buffet is the perfect place to go!

5. Filipinos don’t really enjoy going through an extensive menu.

FACT! Filipinos just want to sit down and eat whatever.

A common scenario when a group of Filipinos dine – looking at the menu – one will ask “what are you having?” the other person will answer “whatever you’re having or whatever he’s having” then a response of “I don’t know what I'm having” then that conversation will be concluded by calling the waiter and asking for the house best seller. A buffet takes away that hassle. You get more time eating and chatting instead of deciding on what to order.

6. Easier to split the bill.

As tedious as ordering your food, Splitting the bill after the meal is a pain! Usually in a group of friends, there is a dedicated or self-imposed accountant who tries to split the bill as fairly as possible but sometimes there is no one to do that. In a buffet, everyone gets to pay the same amount.

7. No left overs to take away.

Eating ala-carte especially in large groups, you tend to order a lot and end up not eating them. In a buffet, you only get what you can eat. No need to take away left overs especially when you need to be somewhere else after the meal.

8. Filipinos just love to eat – A LOT!

I could list hundreds of logical reasons – Blah! Blah! Blah! - but the real reason is simple - Filipinos just love to eat. If you want to experience it first hand, go to Manila for a training or Business Trip. The first thing that your Filipino Colleague will ask you when you meet them are – How was your flight? How’s the traffic? Have you eaten?

If you attended a training here in Manila, you probably know that you will be coerced to eat a minimum of 5 meals a day with a 2-hour interval. I’ll show you a typical training meal plan –

  • Pre-Meeting: Coffee, Tea, Sandwiches
  • AM Snacks: Noodles, Pasta, Sandwiches
  • Lunch: Rice +++
  • PM Snacks: Pasta, Sandwiches, Some Sweet Delicacy Made from Rice
  • Dinner: Rice +++
  • Peanuts, Cookies, Candies in between sessions

So, Buffet as a choice for a meal is a no brainer right?

If you want to see some of the best buffets in Manila – Head over to this link: http://www.dencio.com/2012/10/denciocoms-list-of-best-buffets-in-and.html

Hope you enjoyed reading my first contribution. Looking forward to your feedbacks.

So what do you think? Feel free to Correct Me! Hahahahaha! :)

Sofitel Manila may have the title for the most expensive room in the Philippines but I may have to hand the “Grandest” title to Manila Hotel. Their Presidential Suite is definitely made for a president – not a corporate president – but an actual President of a Country, and a Manny Pacquiao of course.

Marrying the old with the new, Manila Hotel’s Presidential Suite is a room fit for a Royalty. A Private indoor Swimming pool, a private elevator, access to the helipad, an amazing panoramic view of the City of Manila, Exquisite Furniture, Elegant fixtures and accessories, Spacious Living Areas,  Floor to Ceiling windows and drapes, Huge 3D Television, Bose Docking Stations, Extra Luxurious rooms for your friends, and a kitchen and quarters for your servants helps.

For the rest of it, I think I’ll just show you the pictures and you tell me what you think!

How much? …Later :D

Boracay Mandarin Breakfast Buffet21

If our previous stay at Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel was great, the breakfast was another story. We had our complimentary breakfast down at Don Vito Ristorante Italiano. It was ok, nothing spectacular. Although the breakfast buffet was complete with the basics, honestly for me, the breakfast really fell below my expectations. It was the kind that you get from a 3-star resort or hotel. I know that the people don’t go to Boracay for the breakfast, people probably skip it especially if they were out partying all night - but hey, it is part of the vacation package you paid for and considering that Boracay Mandarin is marketing itself as one of the luxury hotels in the island, I think a better breakfast buffet spread is in order.

Boracay Mandarin Resport 19

First of all, let me start by saying that contrary to the popular belief, Boracay Mandarin is not in any way related to The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Makati. They are not sister companies whatsoever.

Moving on… :)

Like me, I know that a lot of travellers nowadays want to a DIY travel Itinerary. Who wouldn't? Aside from the fact that it is relatively cheaper than a packaged tour, a DIY itinerary is very flexible and can be tailored to the needs of the travellers. But lets admit that sometimes, you just don’t want to lift a finger during your travels – it is after all a vacation so why stress yourself right? Given the right package and if you can afford it, why not do it from time to time?

So when Boracay Mandarin offered a super affordable Promo Price at a Travel Expo that I attended, I decided to give it a try. How much you ask? I think it was just around P5,500/pax for a 3D2N triple sharing with free Breakfast and transfers from Caticlan! That is sulit! How? I'll show you why in a bit.

Exactly one year ago, a Gorgeous Hotel opened its doors in Alabang. And it forever changed the hotel landscape in the south of the metro. One year has passed, but until now, I still find it very refreshing whenever I step in Acacia Hotel Alabang. I have been here to dine several times already but the food, the Pandan juice, the service and the interiors never fails to impress me. I just cant get enough of their beautiful and elegant hotel lobby. So when I got the chance to stay, I was really excited.

This is your ultimate, most extensive list and reviews of the Best and not so Best Buffest around the Philippines. A guide to help you compare and get your money’s worth when choosing a buffet. These are the buffets that I was able to personally try to date. Although there are still a lot of buffets out there which I have not tried (but planning to) but so far, I think I have covered the most popular among the buffets in the Philippines. If you think your buffet deserves to be included in this list please contact me ASAP! :p

WARNING: No Leftovers, No Sharing, No Zip-Locks! This posts is rated SPG! Super Patay Gutom! :)

My Favorite Restaurant in the Whole Wide World is Banapple! I can answer that question in a snap. But when it comes to buffet… it’s not that simple. Of course most people would say – Spiral at Sofitel. Probably because it is the most popular, the longest, and currently the most expensive buffet in the country. Some would say Circles at Shangri-La because they like the service and the ambiance. Or perhaps Vikings or Buffet 101 because of the price to food ratio and it comes with overflowing booze! Everybody has their own opinion so, what I’ll do is I’ll just list them all out for you to check out! Eventually, You’ll decide which one suits you best!

But before the list of the best buffets, for the record, as of today.. my personal favorite buffet is Vikings. Cheaper than the hotels, but you get the same quality and quantity. Sulit! Especially with the overflowing drinks! :) But according to my Sources, when the new and improved Spiral Buffet at Sofitel Manila Opens Opens on XXX xx, 2012 we will all be blown away! Can’t wait! :) Sorry I can’t disclose the date, but it will be opening Sooner than you think! With an estimated (not official) price tag of almost 3K per person, better start saving for the ultimate buffet! :)

So here’s DENCIO.COM’s ultimate buffets list for you Guys! (In No Particular Order)

*Seasonal (Christmas Season)
**Closed, The Hotel is now Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts Cebu

I could have name this post The Best Buffets in the Philippines for SEO Purposes! But of course I cannot claim that. I have not tried them all – YET! But one by one I think we’ll get there! Again, if your think that your buffet deserves to be included on this list or if you found a good buffet that is not on this list, please let me know ASAP! :p I will be updating this post by time to time so save this post in your bookmarks!

How about you? What is your favorite buffet so far? :) Let Me know! :)

Hanggang Sa Muli! Paalam!

Tropicana Coco Quench! Coco Water Made More Convenient!

Coco Quench

The Philippines is one of the top producers of Coconut and Coconut Water in the World. In fact, according to Wikipedia, in 2010 we were the top coconut producing country in the world. We are on the Big League when it comes to Coconut!

Largest Coconut Producers in the World

Yes, we have lots of Coconut and Coconut water but when it comes to convenience, the fact is, it is really hard to find a steady supply of clean, hygienic, and fresh coconut water here in Metro Manila. It’s either you wait for the sweaty Buko vendor to pass by or go to the mall to find a shop which sells fresh Buko Juice. We are the top producer but why is this the case? Because majority of our Coconut water products are being exported abroad because of its high demand especially in Western Countries. They sell it in $$$ there! :) Tropicana Coco Quench wants to change that. They want us – the Filipinos - to enjoy the healthy benefits of Coconut water anytime, anywhere!Tropicana Coco Quench Wobble

Freshness: Coco Quench is made by Tropicana (A PepsiCo Company). They use state-of-the-art processing and packaging technology to keep in the freshness and flavor.

Tropicana Coco Quench is the first locally-produced drink with an 8-month shelf life. It capitalizes on the advanced technology of Tetra Pak packaging to replicate the protection of coconuts. This allows Tropicana Coco Quench to stay fresh as the real fruit without the need for preservatives and added flavors. It is also the only drink that utilizes a hip, octagon-shaped packaging for easier grip. The 330 ml pack comes with a pull-tab mechanism and enables consumers to conveniently drink the coconut water straight from the pack. This healthy refreshment can be consumed for only Php30. Perfect for sharing with friends and family, Tropicana Coco Quench is also available in a 1 Litre pack (P80) with a reclosable and 100% resealable cap.

Nutritional Facts: We all know that Coconut water is one of the best natural drinks ever. I won’t bore you with the facts, instead I will show you what you’ll get for every 330ml serving of Tropicana Coco Quench.

Coco Quench Nutritional Facts

The Taste: Hmmm.. Where do I start. Probably to set expectations, Please note that Coco Quench is actually marketed as Coco Water and not Buko Juice. Yes, it may be partly made from Buko Juice but part of is is also Coconut water from matured coconuts. Which is as healthy but to be honest is not as delicious as my favorite Buko Juice. If you know the taste of you’re your Buko Juice, there is a chance that you will be weirded out a bit on your first sip. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that it tastes bad. When served chilled, It is a very refreshing and delicious drink. All I am saying is that It may be a big craze abroad But let’s admit that for us Filipinos, who KNOWS the amazing real taste of Fresh Buko Juice straight from the tree, we have high standards! So to manage expectations  - especially if you will introduce it to your parents :p – please tell them that this is not pure buko juice but a combination of Young and Mature Coconut water. But the bottomline is, when served chilled Coco Quench is still a delightfully healthy and refreshing drink.

Now there you go! Coco Quench 330ml sells for P30 and the 1 liter pack sells for P80. You can get it almost everywhere especially in restaurants and stores which sells Pepsi Products. So if you are looking for something healthy or something different, Go Enjoy Tropicana Coco Quench! :)

Coco Grove Resort Siquijor 26

I love Siquijor! It is one of those places where you can truly feel away from it all. Fresh Air, No buildings, very few cars, no fancy restaurants, very friendly people, quiet, clean and unexploited beaches, cheap, tranquil and serene place. Just look at their ferry terminal (above) white sand! :) I have been to the Mystical Island of Siquijor Twice already but still, I want to go back to this place again and again. I guess, I’ll never get used to the charm and the peace and quiet this Island brings.

Coco Grove Resort Siquijor 01

During those visits at Siquijor Island, I stayed in probably their Best and Biggest Hotel and Resort: Coco Grove Beach Resort. Coco Grove offers you relaxation, privacy, exclusivity, serenity, complete amenities, 800 meters of private white sand beach, native rooms and cottages, without having to burn a whole in your pockets! Rooms Rates starts at P2,400.
